Course Description

Heroes (and heroines) are compelling reasons to see films (think of Oppenheimer), embodying our values, aspirations— and quirks. They are engaging and just plain fun. Professor Alan Barr will discuss their range from the familiar, as played by John Wayne or Clint Eastwood to less obvious figures such as those created by Katharine Hepburn or Marilyn Monroe. Movies like High Noon, Lone Star, and  Winter’s Bone probe the wide variety and nature of the heroic.
