Course Description

This course reviews the three extant films of acclaimed Japanese director Sadao Yamanaka (1909-1938), whose career was cut short by the Second World War. Each subtitled film is assigned as homework via video link and followed by in-class discussion. Led by film fan Daniel Reid, we consider Yamanaka’s compassion for the oppressed, his irreverence in the face of rising militaristic nationalism, and his gentle humor and humanity.
