Course Description
This introductory course prepares students to support individuals with intellectual and
developmental disabilities in leading safe, meaningful, and self-directed lives. Students learn
the essential responsibilities of a Direct Support Professional, including personal care
assistance, communication strategies, promoting independence, and supporting community
engagement.
Through interactive activities, students explore disability awareness, ethical and professional
standards, safety practices, person-centered planning, and documentation. By the end of the
course, learners gain the foundational skills needed to provide compassionate, respectful, and
effective support in a variety of care and community settings.
Topics Covered:
  • DSP role, professionalism, ethics, boundaries, and confidentiality
  • Introduction to intellectual disabilities and history of care
  • Abuse, neglect, and exploitation prevention
  • Cultural competence and community inclusion
  • Individual rights, choice, and responsibility
  • Communication and teaching strategies
  • Human sexuality and positive behavior supports
  • Documentation and accountability
