Course Description

In an astonishing 50-year period, the Afro-Asian world saw its traditional societies, economies, and governments disrupted and displaced by Western colonial powers locked in competition. Instructor Joseph S. Harrington, M.A., covers the power politics that drove Western and Japanese expansion and the response of colonial peoples to the “opening” of their countries to industrial-age commerce. Learn about the “Scramble for Africa,” the creation of “spheres of influence” in China, and the partition of former Ottoman territories after World War I.
