Course Description

Frances Hodgson Burnett (1849-1924) was an unlikely garden writer, particularly of the sort to inspire children. Still, The Secret Garden is a perennial favorite of gardeners. Burnett did not cultivate any substantial bit of earth until she was almost 50 years old. Explore Burnett’s development as a gardener, her gardens in England, America, and Bermuda, and the origins and evolution of The Secret Garden. Course is taught online via Zoom. All registrations must be submitted online two days before class starts. Registered students receive login instructions one day in advance. Taught by Marta McDowell, author and instructor, the New York Botanical Garden.
