Course Description

As revolution convulsed France, three prominent writers furiously debated the meaning of that event and the basis of human rights: (1) Thomas Paine, the radical egalitarian, (2) Mary Wollstonecraft, the first modern feminist, and (3) Edmund Burke, founder of modern conservatism. Led by instructor Joseph S. Harrington, M.A., participants will read selections from the polemics penned by these writers and re-engage in a debate as timely today as in the 1790s.
