Course Description

With Firmness in the Right: The Moral History of the Civil War

To carry on the Civil War of 1861-1865, Americans North and South appealed to the conscience of the world and invoked God to summon unprecedented degrees of loyalty, devotion and sacrifice. Concern for the principles at stake would have a profound impact in shaping ideas about the just conduct of war and humanitarian endeavors. Instructor Joe Harrington will lead discussion of sermons, speeches and appeals that shaped the consciences and conduct of a nation at war with itself.
